Tripura JBIC Project

 

The Forest Department, Govt. of Tripura has entered into an agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for sustainable management of the forest wealth of the state

     
   
     

through improvement of the density and quality of the forest cover of the state over a period of eight years commencing from the FY 2007-08. The JBIC shall arrange the funds under its ODA loan assistance for identified project area of 7023 sqKm, of the state.

 

The project envisages conservation of the soil and moisture regime in addition to the alleviation of poverty of the people who live in and around the forest and are wholly dependent on the natural resources for their livelihood. The conservation of biodiversity and wildlife resources is also the strong component of the project. The Project is being implemented in seven Divisions, in the three Districts of Tripura.

 

The Forest Department of the Govt. of Tripura is one of the pioneers in formulating and implementing the concept of the Joint Forest Management for the conservation and development of its natural resources and it is the central theme of all forestry activities of the state. The concept of care, share and prosper of the JFM mechanism shall also be followed in the JBIC project and 400 new JFMCs are being constituted in the project area towards this end in view and 1250 Self help groups(SHGs) are being formed for achieving the goal.

An Institution in the form of a Society, namely the Tripura Forest Environmental Improvement and Poverty Alleviation Society (TFIPS) under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 is constituted by the Govt. vide the registration no. 5375/2007 on the 24th May,2007 for implementation of the project. The Governing body of the TFIPS is chaired by the Chief Secretary and the Additional PCCF, Govt. of Tripura is the Member Secretary of it. The Society also has an Executive Committee of which the PCCF, Tripura is the Chairperson. Besides a Project Management Unit (PMU) is also constituted for day to day functioning of the Project.
